Dog Training With Prong Collars

The iron maiden, thumb screws, the rack, they all are readily identified by most as torture devices. And when appearances alone mattered, the prong collar could be observed in no better light by the majority of us. Yet you are able to readily enter most pet stores in the most animal friendly states in the united states but still find these units available. Do pet stores hate dogs? Hardly.

I will admit that prong collars seem like horribly cruel devices but theyre forget about meant to do injury to dogs than choke collars (that are actually much more dangerous in unqualified hands). The aim behind a prong collar would be to motivate positive behavior by introducing discomfort for bad behavior for example pulling. They arent designed to inflict punishing pain for each little transgression.

Advocates of prong collars will attempt to market the idea these dog training collars simulate a mothers reprimand. Quite simply, the collar feels as though a grownup dogs teeth round the neck of their pup when it carries its young or expresses dominance. The idea is this fact "dominant" sensation will help with training efforts by establishing the dogs submissive role within the owner/pet relationship. Frankly, I believe this is a load of hooey as well as an make an effort to paint a far more "natural" picture on the wholly unnatural device.

Detractors will explain that prong collars are cruel and very painful. Theyll let you know there are possible ways to coach your dog to not pull which dog training devices for example prong and choke collars are outdated products made to support outdated training styles. Though I am not an advocate against prong collars, a lot of thats on the money. I simply disagree using the cruel and very painful part. In other words, I do not feel this is the intended result.

The fact is the fact that both choke and prong collars can be handy training helps with qualified hands. The issue is within their use by owners who either havent taken time to understand or just do not understand their use. The real results, unfortunately, could be soft tissue and tendon damage. Effectively, without meaning to, you are able to cause continuing and escalating injury to a pet if you do not know the right method to begin using these things.

Regardless your situation on prong collars, theyre still sold but still used today. As a result, if youre planning on purchasing one, take time to learn its correct use. Never slip a prong collar on the dogs head. These units should be attached by removing a clip after which reconnecting in the same manner you may remove a hyperlink from the chain of paper clips. In the event you make an effort to slip the collar on the dogs head, you take an extremely real chance of causing damage to the eyes if the dog suddenly jerk its head.

Prong collars are not shipped to become permanent collars. If you work with one on every walk, constantly, your pet will build up a tolerance youll also find effectively eliminated any training value the collar might have provided. Worse, youll find yourself doing real harm looking to get a reaction from your pet because he wont respond anymore unless the pain sensation is severe instead of just uncomfortable. Just use the collar for dedicated workout sessions to show your pet to heel or otherwise lunge, then switch to a normal collar. Dont leave the collar on the dog if not being walked or trained.

Recognize that the prong collar is made to pinch instead of choke. If you are attempting to choke the life span from your dog having a prong collar, you have to relinquish the collar (and in all likelihood your dog, too). Your objective is really a short pinch whenever your dog pulls or bolts ahead. Pressure ought to be immediately released whenever your dog is behaving or you will be sending a confusing message.

Do not make use of a prong collar on puppies, small dogs or dogs that are particularly skittish or shy. The outcomes can result in serious harm to your dogs confidence which should not become your objective. You would like your dog to understand his devote the pecking order, to not reside in constant terror.

Recognize theres a better way. At the conclusion during the day, youre trying to begin a healthy but dominant relationship together with your dog. Your goals arent to punish, inflict pain or lord over your dog mercilessly. Rather, you need to establish an alpha position born from respect. Methods for example turning and walking another way whenever your dog attempts to forge ahead, forcing it just to walk behind you or just which makes it sit each time it lunges work methods that may be accomplished by having an ordinary buckle collar.

Your vet or preferably a light and qualified trainer with good references ought to be your best guide. Prong collars could be effective tools when used properly by a skilled trainer on the right dog. Not every dogs will benefit plus some may suffer psychological or physical harm due to these units. Result in the wise course of action and solicit qualified advice before even considering a prong collar.

Finally, learn patience making time for you to train your pet from distractions. With just a regular collar as well as an ordinary leash you are able to train almost any dog. Dog Training collars of any sort are merely for expediency. Given a loving, nurturing and patient owner, almost any dog can learn how to be behaved with a gentle but authoritative owner.

We Made It!

After three months of auditions and interviews, we finally made it!

Our final phone interview was last Wednesday with Victoria herself... Victoria Stilwell, that is!
We have been chosen to be a part of her Positively Dog Training team and are so honored!
This means wonderful things for Wag & Train, but also for dogs in general.  Not only do we get to be a part of her shows and marketing campaign, but we are going to help get the message out that force and fear are not necesary.  We are going to strive to educate dog owners on the importance of positive dog training, and we have Victoria to back us all the way.

Stay tuned for some exciting things to come!

Learn alternatives tips to train

A dog can be trained to stop negative behavior such as growling and barking. The information ahead will allow for not only correcting, but hopefully removing these bad habits as well. If you train your dog correctly, he or she will be the ideal pet.

Learn alternatives to treats as positive reinforcement when training your dog. You will find that treats do work. However, most people dont carry treats in their pockets 24/7. Learning to give praise or attention in the way of patting and hugging is a great way to reinforce good behavior, and can be a treat replacement.

Dogs should always feel safe and secure while training them. When a dog is insecure about their safety, they could lash out with bad behavior. So this doesnt happen, make sure your dog is always safe.

If you want to teach your pet to use a crate, first try these simple tricks. If your dog does not want to go into the crate but one of his favorite toys inside and close the door. They will want to get to the bone, which means going into the crate. When they go inside to get the bone, give them lots of positive reinforcement.

It is important to avoid dwelling on one task for too long. Your dog is going to get bored doing the same thing over and over. This is why you need to limit the time of your training sessions to around 10 minutes.

Give your puppy some toys to chew on so they do not hurt while teething, keep other things they might want to chew on out of their reach! Give it one of his toys instead. A wet frozen washcloth is great for a puppy, who has teething pain, to chew on.

If you have to go to work, or something else that will keep you out of the house for more than a few hours, take your dog for a long walk before you leave. Wearing them out helps them deal with the anxiety they feel when youre gone.

Your dogs diet should be healthy and balanced. Too many table scraps can unbalance your dogs diet. Not only does it affect the dogs health, but it can have an impact on its behavior. Simply improving their diet may have a bigger impact on how they respond to training.

Keep count of the number of treats you feed your dog because you do not want him or her to get fat. It is easy to forget about treats when you consider how much you are feeding your dog. This can happen especially when you are training him.

Depending on the personalities of your dogs, it may not be possible to train them at the same time. If your dogs fight or goof off instead of paying attention, it may be wise to do a bit of one-on-one training before training them together.

Try a phrase that you will stick with to train your puppy when you are house breaking him or her. Use the same word or phrase each time you bring him out to go to the bathroom so that he understands what you want him to do and makes a memory link between the phrase and the act.

While training your dog, make sure both of you are having fun. Taking some time to have fun with your dog makes your dog like you more, which means fewer problems when training him. Having fun with your dog during training is one thing, but playing and having fun with your dog outside of training is also necessary.

You can train most forms of anxiety out of your dog. It is quite possible that if your dog frequently barks unceasingly or damages your belongings when you leave, he or she is actually suffering from separation anxiety. You can train your dog on acceptable behaviors that can be applied while you are gone. Also, give your dog lots of love, and show compassion to make him feel at ease.

If you have to keep your dogs outside, never tie them up too close to one another. The chain of one dog could become wrapped around the other and, as the dogs struggle to free themselves, one or both could be injured. Particularly in the case of a large dog and a small dog, the animals may get so tangled that the smaller dog has his airway cut off and dies.

If you are bringing a new pet into the family, make sure to introduce them to any existing pets slowly. Dont adopt a new pet without considering the temperament of your current pet or pets. In order to maximize bonding, a new pet will need a personality which complements the personality of the pet you already have.

Use high-value treats when training for the best results. Cheese or hotdog pieces can be very effective because they are not something your dog usually gets.

If your puppy is caught chewing on something unacceptable, stop him immediately. This helps teach them that they cannot chew on some things and can help them leave your belongs alone when youre not watching.

If its possible, start training your dog when it is a puppy. Its not absolutely necessary, but young dogs do better with training. If you train your dog when he is a puppy, then he will continue to be a good dog for the remainder of his life.

Do not tie a couple of dogs closely together. The dogs could get wrapped up and they may be injured. If one dog happens to be much larger than the other, the small dog could get tangled to the point that it could choke to death.

A clicker works well when training most dogs. Using a clicker is as simple as showing your dog that good things happen when the clicking noise is heard. Try using this technique right away, doing it frequently over a span of a few days. Your dog will soon know that the clicking noise means that they are doing a good job.

Now that you have received the helpful advice in this article, you should now be aware how easy it is to train your dog. With patience and a little research, you can train your dog. The right training can help every dog thrive and be well behaved..

Training Your Dog The Right Way

Training a dog really first requires the owner be trained as well. This can be said because before an owner can effectively train a dog, they must first train themselves on how. Dog training is not an innate skill people are born with, so do they need to do the research to train the dog properly. There is some solid advice in this article about how to do that.

If your dog possesses specific triggers associated to bad behavior, try to keep him busy while the temptation passes. For instance, if your dog reacts negatively to other dogs, you need to keep his focus on you as you come into contact with them. This will help him correlate the relationship between that stimuli and the positive things that come from it.

Understanding the underlying motivations to your dogs behavior is crucial to successful training. It might take a little while to really get to know your dogs likes, but dont get discouraged. Positive reinforcement, while being put through a lot of different experiences and in different environments can help in the success of teaching obedience to your dog. The happier and more satisfied your dog is, the more successful your training will be.

You should not take your problems out on your pet. If your dog has not misbehaved, you should treat him warmly.

Many people are bitten by dogs because of their fears of that exact thing happening. A dog will bite if it feels unsafe or trapped. Force is not necessary to train a dog, and should never be used. Your dog might snap and bite you. By doing this, pleasing you will be one of your dogs life goals as it will see you as the pack leader.

The first thing to do when training a dog is to establish that you are in control. Otherwise, the dog will think that he is in charge and will not respond to your training tactics. When you walk your dog, walk in front of him to establish leadership.

Set the stage for success so that your dog will have little trouble learning what to chew and what not to chew. Excessive chewing is not only damaging to your precious objects, but dangerous to your dog. Things like brushes, small toys and nylons are common things around the house that pose a choking hazard.

Giving your dog the favorite treat can assist you in training your dog. By giving your dog this food, they will want to follow whatever you teach them. Make sure you pay attention to how he responds when you offer him this reward.

Get your dog the proper nutrition required for canine health. Too many table scraps can unbalance your dogs diet. A poor diet can affect their behavior as well as their health. Improving your dogs diet can make training him easier.

Introductions to new dogs or any other animals should occur slowly and carefully. Consider your pet at home before adopting a new one. In order to maximize bonding, a new pet will need a personality which complements the personality of the pet you already have.

Keeping your dog active is an important part of successful dog training and is also good for their health. Dogs are designed to keep busy and active. They need to get plenty of good exercise to be happy and fit. Look for a local agility class, go for a run with your dog or teach him to play catch with a Frisbee. Keep your dog well entertained and you will eliminate many of the common problems, such as chewing on shoes.

Its a good idea to keep in mind the number of treats you are giving your dog throughout the day. Giving him too many will add unneeded calories to his diet and cause him to become overweight. Many people overlook treats when considering the animals diet, but they certainly add up, especially during active training.

Understand when you cant handle your dog on your own, and use that knowledge to know when you need to call in a professional to help you. Training you dog can be tough, and sometimes you need a dog trainer if your dog is too hard to handle. Your trainer will pinpoint the problem areas and point you in the right direction.

Consistency is very important when training your dog. Make a list of all your commands, and ensure that anyone who might have to control your dog has this list. Reward your dog for following commands. Do not reward your dog if he doesnt obey. When the people around the dog use different commands and responses, he may become confused and training could suffer.

Try to use the same words or actions when you are training your dog. A dog will respond to this positively, as they will start to associate that action or word with each kind of behavior. Remember to be consistent about what commands you use and what behaviors you expect in every training session. The more consistent you are, the more likely you are to successfully train your dog to obey your commands.

Make sure training has an element of fun incorporated into it. Taking time to play creates a strong bond between the two of you, and your dog will be more likely to respond well to training. Training is fun for the dog, but you should set aside some real "play time" as well.

Keeping your dog outdoors when you are not home is a good way to prevent chewing. If you cannot put your dog outside make sure you do not leave anything out that your dog can ruin.

Have your dog learn to just hold one of his toys in his mouth, instead of chewing on it immediately. When he puts the toy around his mouth, use a training clicker and offer him a treat. After your dog succeeds in mouthing an object a few times, move on to rewarding the dog for picking it up with his mouth. When he does, just click and then give a reward. After that, only give the reward if he does hold the toy in his mouth.

Just as a human likes to stretch out and lay on their backs, so do dogs. Therefore, it is essential to have a dog bed big enough for your furry friend. There are big, long dog beds around for larger dogs, or you could look for a mattress taken from a crib. This is a convenient and fun alternative because you have the opportunity to change the appearance of the bed and keep it clean by simply putting a new crib sheet on it every few days. The crib mattresses are also waterproof which means they are highly durable.

You can prevent your dog from destroying your home by keeping it outdoors when you are away from the house. When this isnt possible, you want to provide things that both appeal to your dog and that are okay for the dog to chew on. Establishing acceptable chews toys is also about keeping those things you do not want your dog to chew up behind closed doors or well out out of reach.

Now that the people who are interested in training their new pet dog have, hopefully, learned some new tricks, they can proceed to pass them along to their pets. Once a dog is on its way to learning, the owner will begin to appreciate the dedication that he or she has shown for doing the right thing for mans best friend..

Introducing Yourself Observe First Ask Questions Later

While there has recently been a lot in the news about reading dogs’ body language cues, many of us in the dog training industry have been trying to educate the public for years. It has been my life’s passion to help people understand dog language better and prevent dog bites. Whether I’m lecturing to a big audience or teaching a small group class, I am always interpreting body language for pet parents to help them understand how to interpret it themselves. It’s unfortunate that the awful event at 9News brought this subject into the spotlight, but it is a blessing as more people will hopefully pay attention to how they interact with dogs, including their own.

There are three different things to remember when you are going to interact with a dog, and although there are several other factors that could potentially go in to a human/dog interaction, I believe these are the most important:

1) The dog’s body language and cues

2) Your body language and cues

3) The environment and potential stressors around the dog

First and foremost, does the dog appear scared or anxious? Is her mouth closed tightly? Is her tail between her legs, can you see the whites of her eyes, is she standing behind her parent, or trying to get away? Is she avoiding eye contact, whining, barking, or growling? These are all signs of stress and you need to approach with caution. Or better yet, keep your distance and dont approach at all.

(This dog is facing sideways, ears are down, eyes are made smaller as an appeasement behavior, and his lips are pursed with nervous anticipation of what the person with the camera is going to do next)?

Secondly, how will the dog perceive you as you are approaching? Do you have a big computer bag in your hand, a broom, or an open umbrella? Are you approaching from directly in front of the dog, or from the side? Are you using an excited, loud voice or a soft, friendly one? Just because you are excited to meet the ginormous Irish Wolfhound on the street doesn’t mean he will be excited to meet you.

And lastly, what is going on around you? Are there construction trucks going by, or sirens from a fire truck going off? Did the dog just get in to a scuffle at the dog park and you are greeting in the parking lot? Are you in the vet’s office where a dog just got his ears cleaned out? Keep in mind that you may have no idea what has just happened to the dog, so always read body language first, then ASK before introducing yourself, if you choose to do so.

(This puppy has a furrowed brow, pursed lips, and her ears are down and forward... She is unsure, worried, and scared)?

Behavior is always context specific, and dogs will react, in part, according to environmental stimuli. If the stimuli is perceived as good (liver treats, person kneeling, another friendly dog, etc) the dog may be less anxious and will be open to a friendly greeting. If the stimuli is scary (loud noises, bright lights, tall boisterous person, etc), the dog will be more adrenalized and won’t be as emotionally/mentally equipped to engage in a greeting.

This is why I always ask people to set dogs up to succeed. It is so important for the emotional health, well-being, and safety of all involved. Never approach a dog without reading their cues, and always ask the dog’s pet parent before greeting.

Potty training your new puppy

Training should begin immediately after you have gotten home with your new pet. Training your dog is beneficial to both you and your pet. These suggestions will help you in your pet training efforts.

Introduce new animals to one another very slowly. Weighs the pros and the cons before adopting another pet. For optimal bonding, select a new pet whose personality is similar to that of your current pet.

Stay consistent when you are trying to train your dog. Make sure everyone knows the right commands to give the dog; keep a list if necessary. Behavior should be rewarded or not depending on the affect that is being sought. Your dog will become very confused if each person responds differently to a single type of behavior. This will make training very hard.

When you are house training a dog, you may want to use a crate. Let the dog out on a regular schedule to make the crate training most effective. Once your dog has acclimated to the crate, he will be far less accident-prone indoors.

Dogs have the uncanny ability to have single-minded focus when something catches their attention. Repetition and practice will result in your dog waiting to take cues from you rather than being distracted by other things.

Everyone in your household needs to be on board for dog training to be effective. While he may have one person who works with him on a regular basis, having everyone be a part of his training will teach him that he must follow the rules of the house at all times, and keep his training more consistent.

Always get your dogs attention by using his name. To train your dog, you need a certain level of control. Getting them used to their name and coming when you call will help you achieve this. Repeat this several times daily. Also, dont punish your dog if he comes over when you call him by name.

Teach your pet the proper way to walk on a leash. When they walk properly, it makes both of you safer when you both go walking.

You need a commanding control if you are starting to train your dog. Your dog will neither obey nor respect you if he believes he is the leader of your household. Never allow your dog pull on the leash while you are on a walk.

Although there are many benefits to using a harness, you will have less control over your dog than if he is wearing a cinch collar. If you plan on using a harness outside of training, put both that and a collar on your dog during the training process. This will teach him to respond to commands even after the cinching collar is removed.

Using wee-wee pads is actually counter productive when you are potty training your new puppy. The problem with the wee-wee pads is that they leak and leave enzymes from urine and feces behind. Potty pads can also mislead your dog into thinking that similarly shaped items throughout your home, like rugs, are appropriate places to go. The best option is to toilet train your dog outdoors.

Do not wear out your new puppy with an excessive training regiment. Remember that all dogs have short attention spans and puppies even more so. Hell likely forget everything you taught him if you do too much at once. He will also look at training as a negative experience and it will be harder next time.

Choose from a range of treats to give your dog as training reward. These treats cannot be confused with every day treats at first, because you need to create a sense of specialness which will encourage the dog to obey your commands, since they know that the treats they will be receiving are out of the ordinary.

Every dog is unique and is motivated to learn by different things. Dog training can be a learning experience, especially with it comes to determining what motivates your pet. It doesnt matter the reason you want to train your dog, you need to offer a variety of exercises along with positive reinforcement. Any time your dog is happy, you will find they have a better performance.

Challenge your dog frequently. Give him "quizzes" to make sure he still knows his stuff, even if you both know he does.

Dogs are just like people; they love hearing the sound of their own names and the use of the name will call them to attention. It is especially important to do this during the first weeks of training, in order to establish that name-attention association. Make the name simple and easy for the puppy to recognize.

Use your dogs name when you can, as it will help to get your dog to pay attention. By using it as much as possible during the first weeks you own him, your puppy will learn that this sound is in reference to him. Choose a short name that is easily recognizable from other words.

You do not want to use wee-wee pads when potty training your dog. The problem with the wee-wee pads is that they leak and leave enzymes from urine and feces behind. Potty pads can also mislead your dog into thinking that similarly shaped items throughout your home, like rugs, are appropriate places to go. Teaching your dog the appropriate place to go from the start is always the more practical idea.

Try not to use wee-wee pads as a tool in potty training your day. The problem with the wee-wee pads is that they leak and leave enzymes from urine and feces behind. The pads may also confuse the dog because of their shape. It could cause the dog to think that a bathroom mat or welcome mat is a place to go potty. The best option is to toilet train your dog outdoors.

A clicker works well when training most dogs. Using a clicker is as simple as showing your dog that good things happen when the clicking noise is heard. Try using this technique right away, doing it frequently over a span of a few days. Your dog will soon know that the clicking noise means that they are doing a good job.

Dogs that are well trained are normally happy. Use the advice youve read to start training your dog properly..

The Magic Treat Bag

 Sammi, the Labradoodle
This weekend I met 2 of the cutest, most food motivated dogs I have ever worked with.  Sammi, is a 3-year old Labradoodle, and Tabasco is a 3-year old English Bulldog.   Both of their moms called me because their dogs are extremely shy and fearful of people. and have snapped at and tried to bite strangers.   Each dog is also afraid of other dogs and is reactive and defensive.  Both moms said "My dog doesnt like strangers and will growl and snap.  "Hmmmmm" I thought to myself... "Well, they havent met the magic treat bag yet!".

I set up appointments and went to meet both dogs this weekend.  I met Sammi first.  After a few obligatory barks at the door, I entered and ignored her.  I sat down on the couch, with my treat bag on, and tossed Natural Balance lamb meat roll near her.  I would guess that it took about 35 seconds for her to become my best friend...

Then I went to meet Tabasco, the Bulldog.  Can I just say that I LOVE Bulldogs?  The way they walk and snort and talk and drink cracks me up.  Anyway, I actually entered with his mom this time, and I had my meat roll ready.   He didnt even think twice about the fact that I was a stranger, he was all about eating as much meat roll as possible.  For Tabasco, it took about 2.3 seconds for me to become his best friend.

Whenever this occurs (when I go to someones house to meet their dog who bites people), the owners always say "Oh my god, she NEVER warms up that fast.  She hates people!".  Guess what?  Dogs dont love me because of my sparkling personality... they love the fact that I have a fabulous treat bag that really REALLY good stuff comes out of, and I dont push them to interact with me.  I just give them hot dogs and string cheese and meat roll, and they do it all on their terms.

Why is it that people think they must dominate and threaten shy dogs to get them to submit?  (These clients dont subscribe to this, but a lot of my clients do).  How fast do you think it will take an extremely shy dog who is afraid of people to bite a person who tries to dominate them?  Why on earth do you think a shy dog would trust a person who tackles them, pulls their feet out from under them, and growls in their face to act like an "alpha" dog?  How would you feel if someone did that to you?!

I always say that shy and fearful dogs are like cats.  Cats always want to be by the person who hates cats or is allergic to cats.  Can you guess why?  Because people who hate cats ignore them, and cats LOVE people who ignore them, because then interaction can be on their terms.  Anyone who thinks they are a dog person, "Oh dogs love me" and try and force interaction on a shy dog, does, in fact, know NOTHING about dogs and dogs dont love them- they fear them and think they are threatening.

Of course, there is a lot more to re-programming a shy dog to love people or other dogs, but it all starts with positive motivation- i.e. a REALLY good treat!   Please dont ever force yourself on any dog.  Be patient and carry a really big treat bag.
